The patient's own hematopoietic stem cells are collected and stored in advance, then reinfused after high-dose chemotherapy to restore bone marrow function.

Commonly used for multiple myeloma and relapsed lymphoma, where intensive chemotherapy doses would otherwise permanently damage the bone marrow.

Stem cells are harvested via apheresis and cryopreserved; the patient then receives conditioning chemotherapy followed by reinfusion of the stored cells, with engraftment monitored closely in an isolated inpatient unit over 2-3 weeks.

Stem cells from a matched related or unrelated donor are infused to replace the patient's own bone marrow following conditioning chemotherapy and/or radiation.

After donor matching (HLA typing) and conditioning therapy, donor stem cells are infused intravenously; the patient is cared for in a specialized isolation unit for 3-4 weeks while engraftment and immune reconstitution are closely monitored.

Successful engraftment restores healthy blood and immune cell production, with long-term outcomes depending on donor match quality, disease status and management of graft-versus-host effects.
